Delivering a New Classroom Block for a Growing School

Franz Josef Glacier School serves a small community on the West Coast. When they needed to replace an existing classroom block, the Ministry of Education appointed CM-NZ to provide project management and quantity surveying services.

The project involved demolishing the existing building and constructing a new classroom block. The facilities included a kitchen, toilets, extensive decking and covered access ramps. The work also included a site-wide services upgrade.

Planning Around the School’s Needs

The new building needed to support daily school activities and meet the community’s specific needs.

We managed the early planning and design process through to building consent. Clear communication kept the school informed, while staff contributed to key design decisions.

Their input helped us develop practical spaces that reflected how the school intended to use the new facilities.

Managing the Tender Process

We coordinated the tender process and facilitated a site visit for prospective contractors. This gave tenderers a clear understanding of the scope, site conditions and working school environment.

We also supported the assessment of tender submissions, helping the Ministry and school make an informed contractor appointment.

Independent Cost Oversight During Construction

Once construction began, we continued as the project quantity surveyor. We worked closely with the contractor, consultants and wider project team throughout delivery.

Our independent cost oversight maintained financial clarity as the work progressed. Close coordination also supported a smooth transition from construction through to completion.

The completed project provided Franz Josef Glacier School with modern teaching facilities, improved amenities and better access across the site.
