Supporting a Live School Through Complex Infrastructure Works

Te Koromiko Swannanoa School is a semi-rural primary school in North Canterbury. CM-NZ has managed several projects at the school, supporting both its immediate needs and future growth.

In this project, we installed a relocatable classroom and moved an existing covered canopy. We also managed a site-wide electrical infrastructure upgrade while the school remained open.

The Challenge

The school’s electrical network needed an upgrade to support its buildings and future requirements. The work affected services across the site, so careful staging and coordination were essential.

We needed to coordinate contractors, MainPower and the school while managing a complex programme of work. Limiting disruption to students, staff and daily school activities remained a key priority.

CM-NZ’s Approach

CM-NZ provided independent quantity surveying oversight from the initial funding review through to final completion. Our reporting gave Westpac clear information to assess progress, approve drawdowns, and monitor project risk.

Before construction began, we reviewed the proposed costs, contingency allowances, and key risks. We also assessed the cost coverage within Korucon’s contract.

This review gave Westpac and the school a clear view of the project’s financial position. It also created a reliable basis for monitoring costs throughout construction.

Our role required independent judgement and practical construction knowledge. We considered each party’s interests while maintaining clear financial accountability.

Managing the Infrastructure Upgrade

We worked closely with MainPower to upgrade the street transformer supplying the school. The project also included a new power kiosk and mains cables connecting individual buildings and classrooms.

Careful planning allowed us to sequence the work around school operations. This helped keep the school open and functional throughout the upgrade.

Alongside the electrical work, we managed the installation of a relocatable classroom. We also oversaw the relocation of the covered canopy to suit the revised site layout.

Planning for Future Growth

Our quantity surveying team later supported the proposed expansion of Block 10. We prepared a fully measured and costed report using CostX software.

The report established a clear construction budget for the proposed work. It gave the school a reliable cost basis for its planning, funding and future decisions.

Through ongoing project management and quantity surveying support, we have helped Te Koromiko Swannanoa School address its current needs and plan for its continued growth.

EQC Onsold Programme

CM – New Zealand Limited has completed multiple projects for Te Koromiko School; a semi-rural primary school located in North Canterbury. A relocatable building was setup on the school and an existing covered canopy was relocated. The CM team also managed a site wide infrastructure power upgrade. This involved negotiating with main power and upgrading of the street transformer, a new power kiosk with new mains cables run to each building and classrooms. This project required careful coordination and timing to ensure the school could be kept operational. Block 10 the CM QS team have completed a fully measured and costed report using Cost-X to establish a build budget for the ongoing expansion of the school.
